Saint John the Evangelist, Langcliffe, nr. Settle.



This tiny church interested me as soon as I saw it. Looks traditional Yorkshire Anglican, I thought, but on entering, bore some of the marks of Tractarianism. See the tracery and paint work in the sanctuary. There were also windows depicting Saints with latin inscriptions...all became clear when i read that the great Anglo Catholic stalwart, Lord Halifax, had endowed them many years ago. It made my day when I read how a passing colonial Viceroy, upon being informed by the Priest that he had no Green Altar Cloth, left his voluminous dressing gown to make one out of! You can see it here, in the picture above. It was a charming little church, well worth a visit.
